As I meditated today in my new gym space for the first time, I could hear my kids screaming in the basement and the music on the Bluetooth speaker downstairs. The gym space happens to be in an open loft area – really great when I’m on the bike but, as I found out today, not as great for quieter activities like meditation.
I have long said meditation is not about sitting in lotus pose on a mountain top somewhere. Meditation is for the everyday. We practice in silence because it is easier to shut out our external environment and be present. However, if there was an actual “goal” to meditating, it would be present while there are distractions all around us.
This certainly will not be the last time that I meditate in the loft as I think there is quite a bit more for me to learn and practice while life happens around me.
