My obsession with Hamilton continues.

Listening to multiple interviews with Lin-Manuel Miranda, I have gotten some nuggets of how he has worked on different songs. As I was listening to “Hurricane” today, I wanted to know more about how it was created, what his creative process is, and how all the songs of the musical came about.

But why?

Certainly, I will not be trying to recreate it.

My creative process is my own and the only way to know what my process is is to create. The more we create, the more we understand how we actually go about the process of creating. Evaluating our successes and not-so-great work develops our boundaries, practices, and taste. While we can mimic someone like Miranda, we will not be successful by simply replicating someone else’s process because **drum roll** we are not that person.

We cannot approach our creative process as a copy and paste of someone else’s. This form of creative plagiarism will have us contorting our mind, body, and spirit to fit into their process while abandoning our own.

Understanding someone else’s process can certainly be a source of inspiration, but not the end point. We must chase and evolve our own creative process.
